There is a disturbing disconnect between the pretty sustainability reports of some corporations in the extractive industries operating in Papua New Guinea, and the reality of their impacts on the environment and human rights. The disparity raises a red flag for risks pertaining to corporate governance, disclosure, corporate culture and reputation.

Of particular value as a case study in terms of reputational risk is the world’s largest gold miner, Canadian company Barrick Gold Corporation.
